2 Guys and a Classic: Pacific Classic

Joe Kristufek and Bram Weinstein are on the road to the Breeders’ Cup giving us their picks for the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar. This year’s race drew West Coast stars Beholder, California Chrome and Dortmund as well as six others.

Pacific Classic Fun Facts
Surprisingly, in its 25-year history no Pacific Classic winner has ever gone on to capture the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the same year or be honored as Horse of the Year. Pleasantly Perfect won the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2003 and returned the following season to take the Pacific Classic.
The race was run on a synthetic surface from 2007 to 2014.
Trainer Bob Baffert (Dortmund and Hoppertunity) has won the Pacific Classic four times with General Challenge (1999), Richard’s Kid (2009 and 2010) and Game On Dude (2013).
The combined record of the race’s three favorites California Chrome, Dortmund and Beholder is 56-38-8-2.
Committed to his regular partner Beholder, Hall of Famer Gary Stevens gave up the Pacific Classic mount on Dortmund.
Defending champ Beholder, the only female to ever win the Pacific Classic, took last year’s edition by 8 1/4 lengths, but neither California Chrome or Dortmund were in the race.
